THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO KOSHER SALT STORAGE AND SHELF LIFE

At Melach Kosher Salt, we’re serious about ensuring our customers get the absolute freshest, highest quality kosher salt every time. That’s why proper storage is critical – and with this ultimate guide, you’ll have all the knowledge to keep your Melach salt in perfect condition for years to come.

The Truth About Salt’s Indefinite Shelf Life Let’s get one thing straight – pure kosher salt never expires. As a natural food-grade mineral, our salt will retain its flavour and quality forever when stored correctly. But how do you store it correctly? Here’s our non-negotiable guide for ultimate salt preservation…

To keep Melach salt at its peak freshness, there are several essential storage rules to follow:

  1. Cool, Dry Place: The ideal temperature range is 60-80°F. Damp areas like near the sink must be avoided, as moisture will cause major clumping issues.
  2. Airtight Containers: Always store salt in an airtight glass, plastic or ceramic container. Air exposure leads to moisture absorption, oduor absorption, and contaminants getting in.
  3. Dark Areas Only: Direct light exposure can very slowly cause oxidation over many years, resulting in a yellowish tint. Avoid this by storing in dark cabinets.
  4. Away From Odours: While salt has no scent itself, it is highly susceptible to absorbing the aromas of nearby items like garlic, herbs, spices, etc. This can negatively impact salt flavour.

Dealing With Salt Clumps Despite proper storage, some clumping may still occur if salt is exposed to humidity and then dries out again. Not to worry – here’s how we recommend handling it:

  • Use salt cellars or bowls for cooking sessions and replace salt frequently. Never leave out for prolonged periods.
  • Humid environments must be avoided for long-term bulk salt storage under any circumstances.
  • Any clumps can simply be grated, forked, or crushed, and the salt is 100% usable again with no need for discarding.

Our standards for salt storage are exacting, but it ensures you always have fresh, pristine kosher salt at your fingertips.
